Fluency in reading involves the ability to read known words automatically and the speed and ease used while reading. There is a high correlation between reading words per minute and accuracy. If a child is reading slowly and sounding out each word, the meaning of the text will be lost. Reading must be rapid and automatic to glean meaning and understanding. If the words and text are on a child's age and grade level - the reading process should be automatic. A fluent reader should read without missing words, regressions, skipping lines, or making up or leaving out words in a sentence or text. Once words are recognized automatically, the student can then read to learn, problem solve, reflect, or read for enjoyment.

After practicing Word Saccades, a student will automatically recognize these words and reading will become automatic. The words graduate in difficulty starting from first grade to fourth grade high frequency words.
